Reducing carbon footprints is a must: Kalam tells youth

by priyanka last modified 26 July 2010

AHMEDABAD: Former president APJ Abdul Kalam has urged the youths for action oriented steps to cut down the carbon footprints. He was speaking at the launch of the world's largest sustainability and climate change education programme for schools at Centre for Environment Education (CEE) on Saturday.

Inaugurating the programme, Kalam said, "The focus should be on energy consumption and its relationship with environment. It is time for action towards a sustainable environment." Recently, Kalam has been selected as a paryavaran ambassador through a nation-wide campaign of the Union ministry of environment and forests.

Programme co-ordinator, CEE West, Pramod Kumar Sharma said, "The schools which will be part of the programme will work in waste management, bio-diversity, wildlife and forests, energy, water, culture and heritage. The programme emphasises on action towards sustainability."
The Prayavaran Mitra programme aims at creating two crore friends of the environment in schools across India over the next three years.

Kalam also attended the foundation day celebrations of Ahmedabad University. On the occasion, Kalam said, "Good teaching emanates from research. The teachers' love for research and their experience in research are vital for the growth of the institution."
"Dynamic universities which would generate knowledge leaders of tomorrow and act as crucibles for ideas, innovation and enterprises will be playing a crucial role in realising the integrated action for achieving the distinctive profile of the nation by 2020," he said.

On India moving towards a developed nation status, Kalam said, "India has the core competence for integrated action in agriculture and food processing, reliable and quality electric power, surface transport and infrastructure, education, healthcare, information and communication technology and self-reliance in critical technologies. These five areas are closely inter-related and if progressed in a co-ordinated way, it will lead to food, economic and national security."
